A man on 5th ave and Van Buren preached to the public about the word of God to the patrons nearby, only to be met with odd looks and deaf ears.
If that preacher knew how to play sick-ass guitar solos like TESTAMENT, KREATOR, or POSSESSED can, then maybe I would’ve paid more attention to him.
The “Klash of the Titans" tour stop at The Van Buren was led by the aforementioned legendary metal bands from the Bay and Germany. The relatively peaceful Thursday evening in downtown Phoenix was the setting of a night of loud, ass-kicking thrash.
Evil never sounded so good.
The progenitors of death metal POSSESSED took to the stage, greeting the audience to a night of diabolical hymns with the song “Pentagram.” The grizzled, demonic voice of MIKE BACERRA didn’t skip a beat throughout the band’s performance, and the ultra-fast shredding of CLAUDEOUS CREAMER and DANIEL GONZALEZ could summon baphomet himself if they had the Pick of Destiny like JACK BLACK in the TENACIOUS D movie.
Stone demons stood behind KREATOR as the curtain dropped down and smoke blasted the stage. Lead singer MILLE PETROZZA commanded the crowd to build walls of death and to crowdsurf en masse to the point where it began to look like a conveyor belt turning ordinary people into headbanging maniacs. Goblins with spears took the stage before KREATOR shouted “Violent Revolution” at the audience.
The crowdsurf conveyor belt went into 2nd and 3rd gear when TESTAMENT got the crowd amped up. It got a little too wild during the song “Apocalyptic City” after one fan fell down over the barrier in the midst. TESTAMENT paused momentarily as the man had to be wheeled out from the front.
The Navajo nation showed up to party with a big banner present at the barricade. In honor of their devotion, lead singer CHUCK BILLY dedicated the song “Native Blood” to them. The song “Do Or Die” was dedicated to one of BILLY’s friends whose cancer recently came into remission. A wave of middle fingers came up from the crowd as they only had one sentiment in mind:
Fuck cancer.
The fans kept the crowdsurfing conveyor belt going strong until the very end as “Over the Wall” and “Into the Pit” finished out the night of unrelenting thrash.
I wish I could crowdsurf like this at church.
