Beer, friends, and really, really loud thrash metal.

If I were to reinvent Maslow’s hierarchy of needs pyramid, those would be the three categories present.

Arizona stoner thrash maniacs SCATTERED GUTS and friends brought all that and more on their “Human Entropy” album release party at The Nile Underground in Mesa this past week, with Valley acts DOGYARD, MISANTHROPIC, KTHULHU, and ETERNAL all joining in on the fun.

Ak-Chin crossover thrash band DOGYARD got straight to headbanging in unison and shredding as the first act. The echoing screams of vocalist SEVEN GARCIA accompanied by the break-neck speed of the riffs by CHRISTIAN ROMAN and RALSTON JUSTIN got the party started. Young death metal quartet MISANTHROPIC played the soundtrack to raising the dead, opening up with “Death Walking Ghoul.” The speed of the drums orchestrated by XANDER BRIDGE resembled the pace of a machine gun on the song “Misanthropic Wrath.”

Scattered Guts were not the only ones celebrating the release of new music, as KTHULU was celebrating the release of their new EP “The Passer Of The Storm.” Lead singer NOAH RYLEE asked for assistance from the audience to help him sing “Ejaculation Pit,” or that he would (jokingly) die.

I think it was because he was banging his head too hard and the whiplash caught up to him.

The song “Guide Thy Hand” by diabolical death metal group ETERNAL sounds like the track that would be played as one’s soul is being dragged by evil specters down into the deepest pits of Hell. Their dark descent continued with songs like “Hammer Of Eternal Torment” and “Torture Chapel.” To cap off their set, ETERNAL went out with a bang with a sick duet on the song “Faceless Evil.”

SCATTERED GUTS dedicated their set to friend of the scene DARREN FALKENBURRY, and they wasted no time getting straight to ass-kicking, hair-whipping, chest-beating thrash metal. Veteran death metal vocalist RICH FOURMY of PELVIC MEATLOAF made a special appearance before he and SCATTERED GUTS performed “The Arrow Of Time” together.

The encore looked like the ending of a movie with friends and fans coming on stage singing along, stage diving, and moshing en masse. DOGYARD vocalist SEVEN GARCIA plus SAINTBREAKER members JACOB WILLIAMS and SEBASTIAN MCGINLEY joined in, commanding the audience to go bat-shit and orchestrating a mosh pit as they ended the party on the song “Beer.”
