Cleveland devil metal outfit NUNSLAUGHTER and Dallas black metal cowboys THE BLACK MORIAH made a stop in Mesa, AZ this past week at The Nile Theater to bring “The Nunholy Terror Tour” to the desert. Joining them in the festivities were local death metal outfit ABHORRENT REBIRTH, plus black metal acts STIORRA and ENDS EMBRACE.
ENDS EMBRACE, the Indigenous black metal project founded by RYAN SILAS, was born in April 2020 and began the night’s show with the stage drenched in red lights and darkness. In contrast to the demonic screeches and dark stage lighting, ABHORRENT REBIRTH followed up with guttural, brutal death metal with bright stage lights to mix things up. Arizona black metal three-piece STIORRA wrapped up the local acts with echoing screams that sound like a demon torturing a poor soul in a deep well.
Unholy outlaws THE BLACK MORIAH came out from the back dressed like a demonic cult from “Red Dead Redemption.” A noose placed on the drumkit and human spine attached to one of the mic stands set the tone for what the audience was in for. The lead vocalist known as THE MAD ARAB brandished a knife from his belt as he sang of wild west blasphemies in songs like “Slain Children" and “Death Valley Days.” His choice of stage mic was also unconventional, opting for what looked to be a Shure 55SH instead of the standard Shure SM58.
NUNSLAUGHTER ended the night’s festivities bringing out two upside down wooden crosses on each side of the stage lit up with crimson before immersing the crowd in devil metal. Despite the heat, members of NUNSLAUGHTER came dressed in black or in layers, with the sweat only making them look like they were all baptized by Baphomet himself. They ended their set drenched in sweat, refusing to give in to the heat.
