Stoners and metalheads alike came together to Pub Rock in Scottsdale this past week for Portland psychedelic trio HIPPIE DEATH CULT’s North American Transcendental Trip joined by Spokane trio KADABRA. Also joining them in the festivities were Arizona sludge doom cult DAYTRIPPER and two-piece heavy grunge outfit 73 LIBRA

73 LIBRA gathered the crowd first, showing them what they call “scrapmetal”: a no-frills, experimental take on metal featuring only drum and bass guitar. DAYTRIPPER took the stage after, in dark wizard garb while engulfed in smoke. The vocalist, known as The Scribe Sage, spoke to his parishioners, speaking of the Marijuanakon in an otherworldly, robotic voice. The stoned sorcerers began their slow descent and brought the audience into their realm with songs such as “Jarl’s Eyes” and the aforementioned “Marijuanakon,” featuring an electric violin mixed in as the tempo kicked up.

With nothing but green lights and darkness surrounding them, KADABRA played fast, blood-pumping stoner doom to an otherwise laid-back atmosphere. Slow, rhythmic headbanging turned into hair-raising, fist-pumping action.

The night ended with HIPPIE DEATH CULT gracing the Scottsdale crowd with fierce, heavy stoner metal riffs accompanied by haunting vocals from songs like “Red Giant,” and “Shadows” and “Toxic Annihilator.” The galloping riffs from the aforementioned “Toxic Annihilator" makes you imagine the tale of a hero on horseback, on a quest for revenge and sick stoner metal.
