Emo icons Fall Out Boy brought their friends and idols from Daisy Grenade, The Maine and Jimmy Eat World together last month to kick off the second leg of their tour “So Much for (2our) Dust.” Their sold-out date at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA on March 4, 2024 was a testament to their place as legends in the (imaginary) emo hall of fame.
Newcomers to the scene, Daisy Grenade–who describe themselves as a power punk bubble grunge band that serves a bitter punch with a lip-glossed kiss on the side–kicked the night off with a high-energy performance. Despite playing a short set of five songs, the duo screamed their hearts out non-stop and got the already dense crowd up and moving.
Donned in all white suits, The Maine–fellow emo stars who rose to fame shortly after Fall Out Boy–started to bring the punk vibes back to their emo roots playing hits like “blame”, Black Butterflies and Deja Vu,” and “thought i have while lying in bed” back to back. Their melodic sound with hints of grunge was the perfect segue into the rest of the night, and bringing up audience member Steve during “Girls Do What They Want” was a fun moment of audience engagement to keep the energy flowing.
Jimmy Eat World hit the stage running with “A Praise Chorus”, bringing the pop-punk sound even closer to its roots to prepare for an emo kid’s dream karaoke night with a Fall Out Boy finale. The setlist was a great mix of their discography, making sure to play fan favorites mixed with new releases to showcase their maturity–not necessarily evolution like other emo bands of the early 2000s–in the scene and in their sound, growing with the supporters who have been around since day one. They closed out their set with their timeless hit, “The Middle,” causing almost the entire arena to jump on their feet and belt their hearts out before saying goodbye (it’s hard to find a fan of emo who doesn’t know “The Middle,” even if just the chorus).
The decision to have Jimmy Eat World as the opener wasn’t just special for the fans of both of the iconic bands, but it was a meaningful addition for both of the bands themselves. Throughout their set, Jimmy Eat World frontman James Adkins made a point to thank Fall Out Boy for having them on the tour, considering it an honor to play with a band they so highly admire. During Fall Out Boy’s set, bassist Pete Wentz took time to share what an honor it was for them to play with a band they have looked up to for their entire careers. “We wouldn’t be the band we are without Jimmy Eat World,” Wentz shared.
As the lights dimmed and So Much (for) Stardust’s monologue “Pink Seashell” faded out and into “Love From The Other Side,” fans began screaming their hearts out as “the boys” took to the stage. It’s hard to say they played hit after hit and make it seem like a big deal when almost their entire discography is made up of well-known songs that span generations. Everyone from Boomers who listened to Fall Out Boy when their kids were teenagers, to Zoomers who feel like they were born in the wrong generation because they didn’t get to experience the hits as they happened, joined together for a sing-along journey through the band’s different eras. As they say, “you will remember me for centuries,” and that couldn’t be closer to the truth.
Anaheim’s Magic 8 Ball songs–arguably the highlight of the shows for both legs of tour dust–certainly made this stop a night to remember. After asking the 8 ball if they should call it a night and receiving a “no,” Wentz then asked if they should play something old, and with an affirmative and cheers from the crowd, the band broke out into “7 Minutes in Heaven (Atavan Halen).”
But the 8 ball fun didn’t end there. Once “7 Minutes” was over, Wentz asked again if they should go home. The 8 ball gave another “no,” so he then asked if he should “hang in the corner with his five best friends,” confusing the audience until they started playing “Good Girls Go Bad” by Cobra Starship. The arena erupted in screams, excited to hear a cover of another band that shared a fan base with Fall Out Boy, but it became deafening when Cobra Starship themselves appeared on stage to perform their song with the band. It was a completely unexpected twist to the show that was highly appreciated by the audience, especially since this marked Cobra Starship’s first performance in almost ten years.
Running on the high of an incredibly unique 8 ball portion, Fall Out Boy decided to skip the encore break and went right into their final songs of the night. They focused on hits from almost every era with “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up),” “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” and “Centuries.” As always, they closed the night out with “Saturday” off their very first album Take This To Your Grave. It was a night many elder emos (or better yet, emo kids at heart) will take to their graves.
