DEATHDOTGOV celebrate first anniversary at The Nile Underground

Arizona band DEATHDOTGOV, self-described as a “multi-hyphenate, genre-renouncing” group, celebrated their first year of band-hood with a show at The Nile Underground on Sunday, Jan 21, 2024.

The night was filled with local bands and dedicated fans coming together to celebrate DEATHDOTGOV’s success in 2023, and it was evident that the band has grown a decent following in the last year. It was also clear how special this show was for DEATHDOTGOV, and how appreciative they are of their fans’ support, whether they have been around since day one or are just hopping on the bandwagon.

The night’s lineup consisted of noise rock duo Miserable Ghost, Tempe alternative/dreamy rock band Foreign Bodies, and Tempe experimental heavy alternative band The Living Receiver. Each band played sets that–fitting with DEATHDOTGOV’s unique style–completely differed from one another and kept the crowd energized.

Miserable Ghost came out swinging (literally) with their rough, garage punk vibe, showcasing the fun, off-the-cusp experiences that come from noise rock (including very lively mosh pits). Foreign Bodies channeled the euphoric vibes of alternative songs and pop-punk beats that resonated with the singing and dancing audience on the floor. The Living Receiver's experimental and jam-band-eque songs were the calm before the storm, setting the tone for DEATHDOTGOV’s unconventional yet memorable performance.

As DEATHDOTGOV aims to never be predictable with their sound, their anniversary show was no different. As the lights dropped, a notice from the “FBI” came over the speakers, alerting the audience that the members of DEATHDOTGOV (Coba Westerman on vocals, John Bacino on guitar, Dylan Ewin on guitar, and Meghan Herring on drums) were wanted criminals, accused of committing acts of domestic terrorism. Immediately after, two “FBI” agents dragged Westerman up on stage, tossing him down and ripping off the sack covering his head before he jumped up, grabbed the mic, and began belting “Froth”.

Their set featured a few surprise additions, including a bassist and two saxophone players. These additions added depth to the songs’ live renditions and a layer of fun as they occasionally jumped off stage and ran around the circle pit with fans. DEATHDOTGOV played an energetic set, hardly stopping between songs to keep the momentum going all through The Underground.

DEATHDOTGOV has had an incredible first year as a band, including the release of their first single, “The Observer”, on January 19, 2024. With their clear vision of where they want the band to go, they are looking forward to a successful 2024 full of shows around the Valley and beyond.
