Can anything stop Escuela Grind? When they’re funded by Big Homo™, probably f*#!n not.

Katerina “Kat” Economou of Escuela Grind photographed by Alex Gold on January 23, 2024 at The Nile Theater in Mesa, AZ.

Gracing The Nile Underground once again since December 2022 supporting Exhumed, Katerina “Kat” Economou wasn’t going to let a hairline fracture she sustained from their show Dallas slow things down. Not with three quarters of their Ball and Chain tour still left to go.

Opening up the night were Arizona locals Kthulhu, who banged out an impressive nine song setlist, having forgone their sound check to help make up for a late start time. As more of the crowd made their way in, they immediately began getting rowdy, forming circle pits. Not letting the delay in starting slow them down, Kthulhu shredded through their set list as The Underground continued to fill up.

Bonginator, Death Metal band from Massachusetts, took the stage next and immediately opened with a pre-recorded intro track to hype up their entrance. Encouraging more acts of rowdiness and (respectful) crowd killing, Bonginator played song after song about marijuana, poop, and rectal marijuana use as the crowd continued to delve deeper into chaos. After playing through most of their setlist, they played their new release “Blood Dinder” before finishing out and making way for the next act on the tour–Slow Pulse.

Joining the tour from Austin, Texas, Slow Pulse brought the vibes of the night back to a more somber–while still brutal–feeling. Playing a short and powerful setlist that included fan favorite “Incinerate,” a song about vocalist Brooke Hampton’s loss of her mother to cancer. Slow Pulse did an excellent job of making sure everybody in the crowd was sufficiently hyped up for the headliner of the night.

Taking the stage, still in a cervical collar as a result of being launched into the pit just five days prior, Kat was just as energetic as the crowd. They were seen headbanging throughout their own set and hanging off of the pillars around the stage. Massive props to Aspen Vista for making a collar that held up to the energy of Escuela Grind’s chaotic performances.

After blasting through fan favorites, the band played some tracks from their latest EP DDEEAATTHHMMEETTAALL,” released on Jan 13, 2024 through MNRK Heavy, to close out the night. Showing their appreciation for the fans, Kat was later found at the merch booth to greet anyone coming by to pick up a copy, or just looking for a sweaty hug.

Escuela Grind will be finishing their Ball and Chain tour through February 17th, featuring additional openers Brat, and Take Offense before immediately taking off for another East Coast tour with Capra from March 1st through March 9th, solidifying themselves as one of the hardest working names in the game.
