BOYS LIKE GIRLS took on the Downtown Rocks stage at The Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas, Nevada to deliver a performance that brought back a lot of high school memories from their fans last Saturday, June 29th. The iconic band, known for their pop-rock anthems and emo style that influenced the late teens of the late 2000s, performed an electrifying set uniting their longtime fans and newcomers.
They came out full of passion and angst, hyping up their fans as they kicked off their set with the song "Sunday at Foxwoods" from their latest album. The Las Vegas crowd was surely filled with joy as they screamed and shouted every lyric of the songs “Love Drunk” and “Five Minutes to Midnight.” MARTIN JOHNSON never ceases to amaze their fanbase with his charismatic performance of their songs every time he comes on stage.
The band's chemistry was undeniable as they seamlessly performed one hit to another, including favorites like "The First Time" and "Heels Over Head." JAMEL HAWKE, their lead guitarist who recently just joined the band, matched the energy of their bassist, GREGORY JAMES, as they often play side by side to show their prowess in each of their respective instruments.
As they moved to the second part of their set, the band’s frontman came out with his acoustic guitar and started playing the chords to their most iconic song from the early 2000s, “Thunder”. He then started to tease the crowd by stopping right after the first verse and just pausing for a bit, making the crowd eager to hear the first chorus. Everyone cheered as their drummer, JOHN KEEFE, stood from his seat to hype up the crowd. JOHNSON moved closer to the front to finish the song with his angelic high-note singing and a heartfelt performance.
One thing is for sure at a BOYS LIKE GIRLS concert; they never let their fans video record the song “The Great Escape.” During their previous shows, they’ve asked the audience to not take out their phones during the performance of the said song and just vibe to it like it’s 2007 when they first released their self-titled album that included this hit. This time it was different. Last Saturday, they let everyone record only the first half of the song, and then they stopped performing, giving everyone time to put their phones inside their pockets before they ran it back. The entire crowd was suddenly transported to the era when concert goers were just enjoying the shows without recording everything. This stunt became their trademark as a band.
The production value of the show was also impressive, with dynamic lighting and visuals that complemented the band's energetic performance, providing a visually spectacular show even for a free concert. The Fremont Street Experience provided a unique backdrop, adding to the overall ambiance of the night with its neon lights, strobes and bustling atmosphere.
As the evening drew closer to its conclusion, BOYS LIKE GIRLS closed out their set with a heartfelt performance of "Two Is Better Than One," leaving the crowd in awe and wanting for it not to end. JOHNSON played both his and TAYLOR SWIFT’s part on this song, serenading the Las Vegas crowd while his bandmates threw all their guitar picks and drum sticks to their loyal fans. It was nothing short of a perfect way to put an end to a show, leaving their fans craving for more of them in the future and hopeful that they’ll come back to the city very soon.
